Project and Porfolio IV: Variations
“The Saga of Harrison Crabfeathers” - Araujo
The goal for this project was to create several different interpretations and variations of an existing piece. I wanted to challenge myself with a jazz style song from the online library, so I chose The Saga of Harrison Crabfeathers by Araujo. I didn't know what I had gotten myself into. Nevertheless, I created different variations and stems, including a sound design variant, a groove change variant, a variant without percussion, and a variant with live recorded cajon.
I’m going to break this down into small snippets for ease of listening through and comparing each variation. Then, at the end, I give the full original/theme and a demo track of some sections of the different variations spliced together.

As the name suggests, this is a simple variation with no drums. Listen gently.
The live cajon is a simplified part and follows the main motif. Notice the change in piano in this variation as well; this is also a simplified version.

This groove change variation switches it up from the normal speed and uses a double time 4 over 3 rhythm for this break. Listen to the full demo [at the end] for another example of this.
The sound design here was very fun and uses many different sound effects layered in to really change up the feel of the track. Notice the change in style of the drum parts, as well. There are even more interesting examples below and in the full demo [at the end].

The live cajon goes from simple to a little more lively in this section, but still respects the boundaries of the solo happening in front. For other samples of the live cajon, listen to the full demo [at the end].
The sound design here is a little more nuanced, but listen for the changes at the beginning and ends of each solo section. I wanted to do something subtle here to mark the changes during this section.

And now… here is the full original and demo track with variations mixed in. I hope you enjoyed listening through the changes in sound and style.
